We pay attention to minimizing the embodied energy of products we use, by having organic, seasonal and or locally sourced food. Many of our vegetables and herbs are grown in our polytunnels. The vegetables we harvest vary with season, or what we plant. We also have our own seasonal soft fruits like strawberries, blueberries, and goose berries…; and we have a small selection of pear and apple trees around the garden (awaiting maturity). Our own hens supply us with fresh eggs daily.
We source venison from Millstreet Country Park and also get organic meat like beef, pork, and poultry from The Real Meat Co-Operative at Nano Nagel farmers market in Mallow. We get our fish locally from ‘Duhallow Seafood’.
We buy Fairtrade and / organic products such as tea, coffee, milk, sugar, chocolate, bananas, flour, grains etc. We often make our own bread, pizza, biscuits and cake.
Our Green purchasing policy, also embraces organic / Fairtrade products on cosmetics (e.g. moisturisers, skincare), toiletry (toothpaste, soaps, sanitary, toilette paper) and cleaners and detergents (ECOVER, Lilly’s Eco Clean, or household products such as lemon juice, vinegar and bicarbonate of soda are used for all cleaning). At least 60% of what we purchase is Organic, Fairtrade or locally sourced.
